The following post was written before I started this website, as such the notes consist of quotes and summary thoughts as I read the book. I’ve pulled the book club’s thoughts together at the top, along with the original score and the new tier ranking.

Final thoughts

Reads a little differently to the other books. this is almost a more traditional book with a couple of plots and less bouncing around. so much lampooning of the play that shall not be named of course, but what we know of granny is dialled up here. witches really just do what they want and only answer to themselves and each other…. so they don’t go black Alice!

The score is 5.16…67 Dead Kings in a Rock out of Five! Perfectly normal score.

This is an A-tier Pterry book!

Favourite quotes

  • Magic glues the Discworld together—magic generated by the turning of the world itself, magic wound like silk out of the underlying structure of existence to suture the wounds of reality.
  • My great-great-grandmother said it was done to us, once. The fairies swapped a human and a dwarf. We never realized until he started banging his head on things, they say—
  • Verence had never seen an animal with so much built-in villainy.
  • It was witches that were the problem. She’d said she was an apple seller and he wasn’t about to doubt a witch’s word.
  • Granny Weatherwax was not lost. She wasn’t the kind of person who ever became lost. It was just that, at the moment, while she knew exactly where SHE was, she didn’t know the position of anywhere else.
  • The river Ankh, the cloaca of half a continent
  • “If you could see inside your colon you’d be horrified.” “I think I would,” muttered Hwel.

Thoughts during reading

  • I love how the storm is personified!!
  • All the crossing out and revisions of the play!
  • The duke thinking he’s dead and can be a ghost now
