The Colour of Magic
The following post was written before I started this website, as such the notes consist of quotes and summary thoughts as I read the book. I’ve pulled the book club’s thoughts together at the top, along with the original score and the new tier ranking.
Final thoughts
Good book, very funny in parts, fantastic world building. It’s clear Pterry is feeling out some of the characters (death and the patrician specifically), but his characteristic wit is present throughout. This book is really highlighting a lot of fantasy tropes and subverting them.
The score is Four Octavo’s out of Five
This is a B-tier Pterry book!
Favourite quotes

Thoughts during reading

- Rincewind is funny
- The patrician is a bit confused, conniving and ruthless but needed someone to explain to him about counterweight continent politics
- In sewer ants is funny, the first ever policy in Ankh Morpork immediately is used to attempt fraud
- DEATH is vindictive?
- The gods playing a complicated game of dice, it’s gauche to roll a 7 on a d6
- The start of the war between gods who are very real, and atheists who refuse to believe in them
- This really do be a series of things happening one after the other
- Then suddenly there was a thing with slavers that we don’t get to see??
- The circumfence lol
- Hydrophobes are hilarious, hovering on water by the sheer loathing of the stuff
- And a cliffhanger!
