The following post was written before I started this website, as such the notes consist of quotes and summary thoughts as I read the book. I’ve pulled the book club’s thoughts together at the top, along with the original score and the new tier ranking.

Final thoughts

Good book, similar quality to colour of magic, more Discworld lore and development, more structure and cohesive, less genre.

The score is Three and a Half Dungeon Creatures out of Five

This is a C-tier Pterry book!

Favourite quotes

  • “Trees can’t talk,” snapped Rincewind. “It’s very important to remember that.”
  • When a wizard is tired of looking for broken glass in his dinner, it ran, he is tired of life.
  • the Rite of AshkEnte could perfectly well be performed with three small bits of wood and 4 cc of mouse blood.
  • Thus were immortalized in generations of atlases such geographical oddities as Just a Mountain, I Don’t Know, What? and, of course, Your Finger You Fool.
  • “I’ve got some newt sorbet left over from yesterday.”
  • The guest thought long and hard and then said, with deliberation: “Hot water, good dentishtry and shoft lavatory paper.”
  • With a sound that defies description, but which for the sake of completeness can be thought of basically as “spang!” plus three days hard work in any decently equipped radiophonic workshop, the arrow vanished.
  • one could talk about the giant trolls of prehistory who make up most of the Disc’s major mountain ranges and will cause some real problems if they ever awake
  • most people on the Disc were currently in a state of mind normally achievable only by a lifetime of dedicated meditation or about thirty seconds of illegal herbage

Thoughts during reading

  • Sentient spells rewriting all of creation to move some scruffy oik back onto to the disc. Was there no easier way??
  • The librarian!!
  • The tooth fairy isn’t known yet, it’s a silly Twoflower story….
  • Cohen can fuck
  • The Ankh Morepork smell!
  • A good ending, wraps it up, the book was much less segmented than the first.
